Kamal Haasan seeks anticipatory bail

Says the speech was about Godse and not the Hindu religion as a whole

A day after the Aravakurichi police booked Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) founder Kamal Haasan on the charge of spreading enmity on the grounds of religion, the actor-politician on Wednesday moved the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court, seeking anticipatory bail.

In his petition, Mr. Haasan said he believed in universal brotherhood and was for peaceful co-existence. He claimed that the crux of his speech at Aravakurichi Assembly constituency was not about promoting enmity or disharmony among religious groups or sections of people.

“Nathuram Godse himself, in his book ‘Why I killed Gandhi’, had categorically stated that Mahatma Gandhi had acted against the interest of Hindus, and had blamed him for partition. The speech [I] made was on Nathuram Godse and was not about Hindus as a whole,” he said. In fact, rather than creating communal disharmony, the incident had created a threat to his life, including a Minister threatening to cut off his tongue, Mr. Haasan said.

Contending that he was falsely implicated in the alleged offence, Mr. Haasan said he was willing to abide by the conditions for grant of anticipatory bail.

The Aravakurichi police had booked Mr. Haasan under Sections 153 A (promoting enmity between groups on the ground of religion) and 295 A (deliberate and malicious act intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion and religious beliefs) of the Indian Penal Code.

Earlier in the day, when an urgent hearing was sought for a plea to quash the FIR against the MNM leader, Justice B. Pugalendhi said the plea could not be taken up at this stage, and the petitioner could instead file a petition seeking anticipatory bail. The anticipatory bail petition would be taken up for hearing on May 16.
