The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), founded by actor Kamal Haasan, has appointed 114 party district unit leaders, who would propagate its ideology, initiatives and future plans to the people. They will be the face of the party in their respective units.

According to MNM executive council members A.G. Mourya and R. Rangarajan, the party’s ideology is being prepared, which will serve as a blueprint for the office-bearers.

“Questions about what is ‘Maiam’ have been raised constantly. We will address the basic idea of ‘Centrism’ and that this political idea is not very complicated. We also want to communicate what the party stands for by organising local meetings, which are already happening at the ward level,” said Mr. Rangarajan.

The local office-bearers will also speak about the importance of “empowering people” and explain that the party does not stand for providing freebies or money.

“The basic structure of creating party units in the villages is happening from Day One. We are trying to streamline the whole thing — there is a chain of command now,” said Mr. Rangarajan, adding that around 40 departments will be considered while writing the policy document.

Party document

Asked if the party is on track to meet the 180 days’ deadline set by Mr. Haasan on March 8 to release the document that spells out party’s ideology and policy, Mr. Rangarajan said it was getting ready. “But, we have already started talking about it. The broad contours of what it would contain — health, women, industries, reservation, anti-corruption — was mentioned at the Tiruchi meeting in April,” he said.

According to him, questions that were raised (outside the House) by the MNM during the recent Budget session in the Assembly, reflected the party’s ideology. “For instance, we had asked if the government would form the ‘Police Reforms Commission’. Our policy document will also feature this,” he said.
