The Central region produced a State second rank and several noteworthy performances in the Plus Two examinations, results of which were out on Thursday. The Puducherry topper came from Karaikal.
The results offered a mixed bag for the region. The backward Perambalur district showed an appreciable increase in pass percentage to climb up to the second position in the State in terms of overall pass percentage, but its neighbour Ariyalur was placed at the bottom of the table. Tiruchi fared better and was placed sixth among the districts.
Special coaching to government school students and regular tests propelled backward Perambalur district to bag the second place in the State in overall pass percentage in the Plus Two examinations even as its neighbouring Ariyalur district was placed at the bottom.
Perambalur, which was fourth in the overall pass percentage last year, moved forward this time to occupy the second spot registering 97.25 per cent, a marginal increase of 1.2 per cent over the previous year. Thirty two schools in the district, including five government schools and an Adi Dravidar Welfare school, got cent per cent pass.
R. Rajadurai of Raja Vignesh HSS, Melamathur, topped in the district scoring 1,180 marks followed closely by M. Renuka of Sri Ramakrishna MHSS, Perambalur, and N. Meena of Raja Vignesh HSS, Melamuthur, who secured 1,177 and 1,176 marks respectively.
A total number of 8,296 students, including 4,120 girls, took the exam. Of them, 8,068 children cleared the exam. The pass percentage of boys was 97.46 while it was 97.04 in the case of girls.
The district bagged the first place in the State in respect of overall pass percentage at government schools level. The overall pass percentage was 94.34.
The top three students at the government school level underwent coaching under the ‘Super 30’ scheme introduced by the district administration. Classes were held under the ‘Super 30’ scheme at the Government Higher Secondary Schools at Perambalur, Kurumbalur, and S. Aduthurai.
Special coaching imparted to government students on weekends and regular tests propelled the district in bagging the second spot in the State, said an Education Department official here.
