Memorials for six leaders soon

Birth anniversary of John Pennycuick to be observed

Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Thursday announced that the government would build memorials with libraries to honour the lives of six leaders in the State.

Making a suo motu statement under Rule 110 of the House, he said memorials would be built at a cost of ₹1 crore each for Kavimani Desika Vinayakam Pillai at Therur in Kanniyakumari district, Perumbiduhu Mutharaiyar in Tiruchi district, Rettamalai Srinivasan at Kozhiyam village near Maduranthakam and V.K. Palanisamy Gounder at Vettaikaranputhur in Coimbatore district.

All of them will have a library on the premises, he said.

A memorial would be built for Sir A.T. Panneerselvam of Justice Party in Tiruchi district at a cost of ₹50 lakh and one for Allala Ilaya Nayagar at Jedarpalayam at a cost of ₹30 lakh.

Renovation work

The government would spend ₹75 lakh on renovation of the memorial for Ondiveeran at Tirunelveli district and Veeran Sundaralinganar at Kavarnagiri. They also will have libraries.

The Chief Minister announced that the birth anniversary of John Pennycuick (January 15), who built the Mullaperiyar dam, and Kalingarayan ( Thai 5) would be celebrated as government functions.

Likewise, the government would celebrate as State functions the birth anniversaries of Veeran Alagumuthukon, Ma.Po. Sivagnanam and C.Pa. Aditanar.

The Kongunadu Makkal Desiya Katchi and the Dakshina Mara Nadar Sangam thanked the Chief Minister for his announcements on Kalingarayan and C.Pa. Aditanar respectively.
