Students of government schools who scored low marks in mathematics, and commerce brought down the overall pass percentage in Plus-Two examinations in the district.
Pass percentage
From 92.92 in 2014, the pass percentage dropped to 90.40 in 2015.
Of the 512 students who appeared for the examination from a school in R. Pudupalayam, 435 passed. Forty seven students failed in mathematics.
Of the 275 students who appeared for the examinations at boys school in Pallipalayam, 214 passed. Most of the students failed in commerce.
A majority of the 52 students of government school at Komarapalayam failed because of mathematics.
In boys school at Vennandur 44 students failed, Namakkal South school 43, boys school at Namagiripettai (33), and girls school at Pallipalayam 32 students failed.
An analysis by officials of the Education Department showed that most of the failures were in these two subjects.
At a meeting chaired by Chief Educational Officer S. Gobidoss, headmasters said that just because students failed to secure pass mark in these subjects, the overall pass percentage of schools decreased. They said that many of these students do not attend the classes regularly.
Mr. Gobidoss told The Hindu that teachers handling mathematics, and commerce will be asked to provide special coaching for slow learners.
