Man who made hoax call arrested


On Sunday, the man had made a hoax call about a bomb placed at the Erode Railway Junction to the Chennai police control room

A 32-year-old man from Mettupalayam, who stole a mobile phone, and made a hoax call when inebriated was arrested by the police on Monday.

On Sunday evening, the police control room in at Chennai received two calls from a person stating that bombs were placed at Erode Railway Junction, Erode bus stand and a temple in the city. The caller introduced himself as Ibrahim. Sleuths of the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS) carried out checks at the junction, bus stand premises and temples in the city and found the calls to be a hoax.

Using the address proof of the sim card received from the mobile network, the police picked up M. Sivakumar (32) of Karungalpalayam who told the police that the address was being used by his brother-in-law, S. Lingaraj (41). The police picked up Lingaraj who said that his mobile phone had been missing for the past two days.

On Monday, the police picked up R. Santhosh Kumar alias Santhosh of Balaji Nagar of Mettupalayam from Erode Railway Station who said that he had stolen the mobile phone from Lingaraj on October 1 and made the hoax calls while drunk.

Erode Town Police registered a case under Sections 66D (cheating by personation by using communication device) of The Information Technology Act, 2008, 124A (sedition), 336 (endangering life of others), 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) and 507 (criminal intimidation by an anonymous communication) of the IPC. He was arrested by the police and lodged in prison. The other two men were let off after inquiries.
