The Mahila Court on Thursday sentenced a labourer to 10 years imprisonment for abetting his wife to commit suicide.

As Manikandan (38) of Gurusamipalayam in Chithode limits, a drunkard, had ill-treated Veerammal (21), suspecting her character, she committed suicide, within three years of their marriage. The couple had a one-and-a-half-year old son when Veerammal had committed suicide. She had hanged herself after writing a letter describing the reason during February, 2013.

Mahila Court Judge Thirunavakarasu sentenced Manikandan to three years imprisonment under IPC Section 498 A, and 10 years under Section 306. Both terms are to run concurrently.
