A 35-year-old man who went to relieve himself behind shrubs in Vellore was mistaken for a wild boar and shot at with a country gun by a member of the Narikurava community on Wednesday. He has been admitted to the hospital after he sustained injuries.
According to the police, Shanmugam, 35, a resident of Ramapuram, runs a tailor shop near Walajapet bus stand.
On Wednesday morning, he went to relieve himself behind a bush in a ground, when Venkatesan, 24, a member of the Narikurava community residing in the neighbourhood, was passing by.
“He saw the bushes moving and thought it was a wild boar. He took his country gun and shot at the bushes. He realised his folly when he heard Shanmugam screaming for help and sped from the spot,” said an officer attached to the Walajapet police station.
The neighbours, upon hearing the cries, rushed Shanmugam to the hospital for treatment. “Venkatesan had used pellets in his gun and not bullets. Shanmugam sustained injuries on his head and is undergoing treatment,” the officer added.
The police have registered a case and arrested Venkatesan.
“We have seized his gun and further investigation is on,” the officer explained.
