A 32-year-old worker committed suicide by jumping off an under-construction electricity transmission tower at Nelvaaipalayam in Tiruvannamalai district on Friday.

The police gave the name of the victim as A. Ramesh, 32, of Enthuvampaadi.

Mr. Ramesh was unemployed and had frequent quarrels with his wife, Geetha, the police said. He used to doubt her fidelity. On Thursday, a quarrel broke out between the couple.

Police and relatives arrive

Around 5.30 a.m. on Friday, Mr. Ramesh climbed a nearby electric transmission tower.

Some villagers who saw him alerted the Kalamboor police.

The police rushed to the spot and tried to dissuade him from jumping.

However, Mr. Ramesh did not relent. Soon, three of his relatives climbed the 300-foot tower and tried to help him.

He started climbing down with them but suddenly jumped and died on the spot.

Those in distress or having suicidal tendencies could seek help and counselling by calling State’s health helpline 104 and Sneha’s suicide prevention helpline 044-24640050.
