Police have arrested a 35-year-old man on a charge of sexually abusing two schoolchildren at Nallirukkai in Kadaladi block in the district when they came out of the school during interval time.

The police said the accused, Veera alias Muthuramalingam, took the girls – one eight years old and the other five years old – studying in the local Panchayat Union Middle School, to a secluded place and abused them on Tuesday.

Muthuramalingam, a school dropout, also inflicted burns in the forearm of the eight-year-old girl with a cigarette butt, and threatened them not to reveal the incident to anyone.

Mother enquires

The incident came to light when the mother of the girl noticed burn injuries in her forearm and questioned her about it, the police said.

The mother called the Common Access Number 83000 31100 of “Hello Police” service, recently launched by the district police, and lodged a complaint on Tuesday evening.

Within hours, the police reached the village and arrested the accused.

He was arrested under Section 10 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012.

He was produced before a magistrate court which remanded him in judicial custody on Wednesday.

Muthuramalingam also inflicted burns in the forearm of the eight-year-old girl with a cigarette butt, and threatened the girls not to reveal the incident to anyone.
