Man gets life imprisonment


A man, who had abducted and married a minor girl, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mahila Court on Monday.

Ramasamy (33) of R.N. Pudur, a TV mechanic, had enticed a 15-year-old girl, and had married her in a temple in Pollachi in December 2014. Based on a complaint lodged by the girl’s parents, the Chithode police arrested Ramasamy and restored the girl to the family.

The accused was sentenced to life imprisonment under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act 2012, and also directed to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000. Mahila Court Judge Thirunavakarasu also sentenced him to two years under The Prohibition of Child Marriage Act. The terms will run concurrently.

The Judge also recommended a compensation of Rs. One lakh to the affected girl by the government.
