A day after his wedding, a man is alleged to have committed suicide after his wife left him complaining that there was no individual toilet in his house.

Deepa and S. Selladurai were in love and got married at a temple in Omalur on September 23.

A day after the wedding, she left his house at Kottagoundampatti village near Omalur, stating that defecating in the open was not acceptable.

When Selladurai sought to pacify her, Ms. Deepa reportedly stood her ground and had said that she would join him only after a toilet was constructed.

Upset over this, he allegedly committed suicide on Wednesday; his body was found in a well on Thursday.

The police sent the body to the Government Mohan Kumaramangalam Medical College Hospital for autopsy.

District Collector Rohini R. Bhajibhakare directed the Block Development Officer of Omalur to make an on-the-spot study of the sanitary conditions in the village and submit a report. The village had common toilet facility, official sources said.

The issue of the absence of toilet in the house of the victim would be verified.

Salem’s distinction

Salem has achieved the status of ‘open defecation-free district’ with the construction of individual toilets in 2,68,876 households in 385 village panchayats with government subsidy under the Clean India Mission, as per baseline survey of 2011 census.
