A 38-year-old man belonging to Sankagiri in neighbouring Salem district who had committed robbery in a couple of households in recent months under the pretext of extending marriage invitations was nabbed by a special team on Wednesday.
Muthukumar, a former employee of a cement company, was cornered near Veerappanchathiram when he attempted to flee in his car during the early hours on finding the team conducting vehicle checks. The police seized 17.5 sovereign gold jewellery from him.
Muthukumar, who had committed robberies at houses where women were alone, at Selvam Nagar and Moolapalyam, was nabbed when he was planning to strike for the third time.
Muthukumar had reportedly told the police that he had suffered heavy loss in stock market and that he had committed robberies by downloading soft copies of marriage invitations from Internet and approaching houses with the hard copies, to settle debts.
Superintendent of Police M.R. Sibi Chakravarthy felicitated members of the special team.
