A male leopard, aged around six years, was electrocuted when it came into contact with a live circuit on a wind farm transformer at Edayankinaru village under Kangayam forest range on Thursday evening.

District Forest Officer A. Perisasamy told The Hindu that the leopard was found hanging on the transformer which was at a height of 15 feet.

Farm tower

“Probably, the animal could have climbed the wind farm tower, which has the blades at the top and a transformer below where the electric current gets generated before been passed on to the power grid, to get some view of the area like normally they do from a tree in the forests or it could have chased one of the peacocks stood on the blades”, he said.

Forest officials added that the leopard would have strayed into the farm after travelling from forests in Amaravathi or Udumalpet areas.

Autopsy

An autopsy conducted also confirmed that the leopard died due to passing of electric current, the DFO said.
