Additional Advocate General P.H. Arvindh Pandian on Friday told the Madras High Court that he is going to play a video clip before the Madurai Bench of the High Court on Monday to display the violence perpetrated by the protesters during a rally against the Sterlite Copper smelting plant in Thoothukudi on May 22.

During the hearing of a case related to the alleged prevalence of orderly system in the police department, the AAG told Justice N. Kirubakaran that the latter’s views on the police risking their lives to safeguard the people was absolutely correct if one gets to watch the way in which the police had handled the Thoothukudi violence.

“If an opportunity beckons, I would like your lordships also to watch the video clip some time.’

“It is unimaginable as to what the police went through on that day. They were virtually standing between violence and us. I am going to play the video to the judges in the Madurai Bench on Monday,” he said.

‘Know reality’

Immediately, Mr. Justice Kirubakaran said: “Throw it open to the people. Release it for public view. Only then we will know what actually happened.

People should know the reality. The police might have indulged in excesses or the rioters might have done so. We do not know that but the facts should be in the open.”
