In honour of the former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam who passed away last week, the Madras High Court and its Bench at Madurai would work for 15 minutes extra for the rest of the working days this week.

Making a reference of the demise of the former President at the High Court on Monday, Chief Justice S.K. Kaul said, “Work being worship for him, keeping in mind his sentiments, this Court will work 15 minutes extra each day for the remaining part of the week.”

The Registry of the High Court was also directed to send a copy of the reference to the members of the bereaved family. The High Court had on Thursday last remained closed on the day of the funeral of Kalam.

Recalling the humble beginnings of the former President, who distributed newspapers in his early days, the Chief Justice said, “He was a Muslim, brought up by a Hindu family and ultimately met his end at a Christian hospital. His life shines as a bright lining against the contours of the secular fabric of our country.”
