Locals express displeasure over continuous shrinkage of Ganirowther tank

June 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - ERODE:

Residents of localities surrounding Ganirowther tank have conveyed to the official machinery their displeasure over continuing construction activity on water body notwithstanding notices issued on the builder.

Encroachment

At a meeting with District Revenue Officer R. Satheesh last week, representatives of Ganirowther Tank Retrieval Committee expressed their disappointment over a recent RDO-level survey ruling out any large-scale encroachment of the water body.

While acknowledging that the Revenue Department has the leverage to grant pattas on tank areas, the Committee Convenor Nilavan said that the officials were presented documentary evidence to establish that about seven acres have been encroached. The actual size of the tank, as per the original layout, was 26 acres of which seven acres had been categorised as patta land over the years.

But, the tank spread was now limited to only around 14 acres. The RDO survey indicates that only one acre had been encroached.

Violation

The discrepancy must be set right and the officials have to respond responsibly to the continuing violation of rules by a builder of a multi-storeyed complex on the tank area classified as patta land, the Struggle Committee has demanded.

Survey

The Committee was assured that the District Revenue Officer R. Satheesh will undertake a personal survey of the tank on June 18.
