Liquor shops to remain closed today

February 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Tiruvannamalai:

In view of ‘Vallalar’ Ramalinga Adigal memorial day all the TASMAC liquor shops and bars in Tiruvannamalai district will remain closed on Tuesday.

District Collector A. Gnanasekaran has said this in a statement issued here on Tuesday.

Vallalar, a poet/saint, who propagated absolute love that he was named “Arutperunjothi” (meaning Big Flame of Grace). He went into seclusion near Vadalur and mysteriously disappeared on January 30, 1874.

But in Tamil astrological calendar the day falls on Poosam star in the Tamil month of Thai.

Hence Vallalar’s memorial day is being celebrated on Thai Poosam every year instead of January 30. This year’s Thai Poosam falls on February 3.
