After many days of scorching heat, Monday evening became much cooler as a spell of showers washed over Vellore and Ambur.
The showers in Ambur were a little heavier than the one experienced by Vellore town.
Odukathur, Veppankuppam, Kuruvarajpalayam, Veerankuppam, Thennampattu, Modhagapalli received mild showers accompanied by lightning and thunder, making the roads in these villages slushy.
People in these regions said though these spells won’t help their farms now, it would reduce the heatwave conditions, which have been persisting since the start of April.
Similar spells of rain were experienced in Vaniyambadi on Saturday and Sunday, and the wind caused extensive damage to plantain crops in the region, farmers said.
Rising temperature
The day temperature recorded in Vellore on Monday was 40.50 degree Celsius and the same conditions prevailed on Sunday as well.
Till Sunday, Alangayam received 17.2 mm of rain while Tirupattur and Ambur received 41 mm and 10.8 mm rain respectively.
The rainfall brought a much needed respite to the people suffering from the sweltering heat. The sky remained overcast throughout the afternoon.
