Left party functionaries stage protest against US President’s visit

Police arrested 47 Left party functionaries, including a woman, here on Saturday when they tried to stage a protest against the visit of US President Barack Obama to India to participate in the Republic Day celebrations.

The protestors had announced that they would stage a demonstration at Palayamkottai in protest against the visit of Mr. Obama.

As the police did not give permission for the agitation, the protestors were arrested when they gathered at Jawahar Grounds, Palayamkottai. They were released later.

As many as 103 members, including 23 women, of the Left parties were arrested here for staging a protest against Mr Obama’s visit to India.

As part of nation-wide agitation, leaders and cadres of the CPI (M), CPI and CPI (ML) staged an agitation in front of Anna statue near central bus stand, Vadaseri, on Saturday evening.

They raised slogans against the NDA government. The agitation was presided over by CPI (M) district committee member S. Anthony.

CPI (M) district secretary N. Murugesan, former M.P. A.V. Bellarmin, CPI district secretary Durairaj, CPI (ML) district secretary Anthony Muthu and others were arrested.

The arrested were released later.
