“DMK indulging in electoral malpractices”

Accusing the DMK of indulging in electoral malpractices in Pennagaram, Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) election committee chairman T. Velmurugan had written to Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta calling for immediate action against those who were involved.

In his letter dated February 27, Mr. Velmurugan, who represents Panruti in the Assembly, said the ruling party members with the help of some officials had distributed clothes and cash to 32,000 families on the night of February 26.

When the PMK members and the public had tried to complain to the police and election officials, rowdy elements belonging to the DMK had attacked them resulting in the hospitalisation of five people in the Pennagaram government hospital, he said.

Following a complaint registered by him, the police were investigating, Mr. Velmurugan said.

He said the party had also videographed the distribution of lakhs of dhotis and saris and forwarded the information to the Election Commission.

Mr. Velmurugan urged Mr. Gupta to take immediate action against the officials involved and to bring Central police forces and Central government officials to ensure free and fair election.

Mr. Velmurugan also requested Mr. Gupta to provide police protection to him as he had been threatened with his life by some elements.
