“DMK has always worked for Sri Lankan Tamils”

Jayalalithaa moved resolution in Assembly demanding capture of Prabakaran: Karunanidhi

April 08, 2011 02:10 am | Updated 02:24 am IST - CHENNAI:

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has always worked for the welfare of Sri Lankan Tamils, DMK president and Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi said on Thursday.

Referring to All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa's present position on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue, Mr. Karunanidhi said she was now projecting herself as a custodian of the Tamils. But, it was she who openly said in the context of the Sri Lankan Tamils' struggle that in a war the killing of people was common.

When the AIADMK was in power, a resolution was moved by her in the Assembly, demanding the capture and extradition of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam leader V. Prabakaran.

Party's stand

Recalling his party's stand on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue over the years, the DMK leader said it was extremely painful to him when the struggle ended in a failure due to fratricidal war.

When a large number of Tamils were killed by the Sri Lankan army during the Eelam War IV, it pained him more and he wrote eulogies.

Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu said the AIADMK-led front was marked by lack of unity.

Committed to freebies

Indian Union Muslim League president K.M. Khader Mohideen said the DMK was committed to the continuance of freebies in the interests of the poor.
