“Alliance with party that protects people's interest”

January 27, 2011 01:57 am | Updated 01:57 am IST - Chennai:

Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) leader Vijaykanth on Wednesday said he would enter into an alliance with a party that would protect the interests of the people and his party cadres.

Addressing hundreds of party men, he assured them that he would never pledge the party in return for an alliance. When a section of cadre raised their hands to make ‘Two Leaves' symbol of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), the actor-cum-politician smiled for a moment and said he would soon bring them news that would make them happy.

The actor was critical of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government. Though it had made some efforts to bring down the prices of toor dhal and palmolein, he charged that nothing had been done to keep the prices of tomato, onion and other essential commodities under control.

He wanted to know why the Chief Minister who was not bothered to visit New Delhi to hold talks with the Centre to bring down prices was rushing to the capital now.

“Elections are approaching and he is meeting the Congress leaders to discuss seat-sharing,” he said.

Mr. Vijaykanth accused the DMK of spreading a rumour that he was not sober when he addressed his party cadre at a recent conference in Salem.

“If the DMK has so much concern for me, why its government run retail liquor shops through TASMAC?” he asked.
