‘Know Our Birds’ training

Forest Department has announced a new training programme for school students titled ‘Know Our Birds’ during the summer vacation at Vellode Bird Sanctuary from May 23.

Under the training programme, students of VIII to XII will gain a rare opportunity to spend the morning hours with nature, watching birds, and learning the characteristics and living pattern of native and foreign bird species at the Wetland Bird Sanctuary in Vadamugam Vellode village, located a few hundreds of metres off the Erode - Chennimalai road in Perundurai Taluk.

Figuring among one of the 10 prominent bird sanctuaries in Tamil Nadu, it is flocked by more than 100 native and foreign species for nesting and procreation.

The initiative envisaging environment awareness and infusion of knowledge about birds among students involves watching the various species with binoculars provided by the Forest Department, discussion about the observation, and interaction with ornithologists based on a power point presentation. The students who go through the process will receive certificates.

The schedule: arrival at 5.30 a.m., tea time till 6 a.m., bird watching from watchtower and spotting scope till 8 a.m, breakfast till 8.30 a.m., discussion on birds observed and power point presentation on benefit accruing to mankind from birds till 9.30 a.m.

According to a Forest Department release, an aspiring student could register his or her name paying Rs. 200 towards training fee. Twenty students will be trained per day. Students attending the programme will be required to make their own transport arrangements.
