In an attempt to help the quake-hit people in Nepal, the Sripuram Trust, comprising different stakeholders in Tirupur knitwear cluster, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (Tirupur district council) have jointly started collecting apparels from units here.
“We are aiming to dispatch at least one truck full of garments worth around Rs. 35 lakh, raised through donation, within the next few days to Nepal which include T-shirts, kids-wear and women’s wear,” M. Veluswamy, chairman of CII (Tirupur district council), told The Hindu .
The apparel units in the cluster were requested to donate at least the surplus garments generated in the production process, for the social cause.
However, the response to the call was yet to gain momentum.
“Till now, only two companies have donated apparels after the appeal was made a couple of days ago. We are expecting that the donations will significantly pick up in the next few days,” said T.R.Vijayakumar, coordinator of Sripuram Trust.
Industry observers pointed out that response to the calls for social causes usually start in a lukewarm manner in the cluster which generates annual turnover of more than Rs. 30,000 crore in total, especially when the donations were sought away from the media glare.
Mr. Vijayakumar said the relief materials from the cluster would be sent to the people staying in relief camps in Nepal.
