KKNPP complex to be besieged with boats

The Anti-Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project Struggle Committee has decided to lay siege to the nuclear complex by sea in country boats and mechanised vessels on October 8.

A decision in this connection was taken at a meeting held at Idinthakarai on Thursday, which was attended by community leaders from various coastal hamlets in the southern districts and the leaders of good number of small political outfits.

The resolution said thousands of fishermen from various parts of Tamil Nadu would lay siege to the KKNPP in country boats and mechanised vessels on October 8 as part of the ongoing agitation against the nuclear power project.

When the fishermen were on a ‘sail protest’ near V.O. Chidambaranar Port in Tuticorin to lay siege to the approach channel of the harbour on September 21, around 700 country boats and mechanised vessels participated. Encouraged by the response to this protest, the Anti-KKNPP Struggle Committee has announced a similar protest and this time, the KKNPP premises itself would be under siege, the protesters have said.

In a bid to take the 409-day-long agitation to the State capital in a big way, the protesters have also decided to lay siege to Fort St. George on October 29 even as Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly would be holding a special sitting as part of its Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

Another resolution condemned the “desecration of St. Lourdes Church by the police.” “Since the statue of Holy Mother Mary was damaged by the police after the law-enforcers violently chased away the protesters from the Idinthakarai beach on September 10, a special Holy Mass will be conducted at Lourdes Church on September 30,” the resolution said. The meeting also appealed to the striking fishermen to resume their fishing operations from Saturday onwards so that they could gear-up for the next round of protests against the KKNPP.
