Kin of self-immolation victim receive body

Police had said it would be disposed of if unclaimed

A day after police served a notice warning that the body would be disposed of under the Public Health Act if they do not receive the body in 24 hours, family members accepted on Monday the body of S. Charles (55), parish council vice-president of St. Arulanandar Church in Oriryur, who allegedly committed self-immolation on August 31.

The body was kept in the mortuary at the district headquarters hospital here for nearly a week after it was brought to the mortuary on the night of August 31 after he allegedly set himself immolation after a rift with Church priests over carrying the flag for the flag-hoisting ceremony. Even after the post mortem was conducted on September 2, the family members and villagers refused to accept the body, stating that they suspected a foul play in the death and demanded that the CB-CID probed the case after registering cases against those who instigated the death.

Though Superintendent of Police N.M. Mylvahanan offered to directly supervise the investigation and promised a transparent investigation by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of District Crime Branch, the agitators said they would take a decision only after seeing the copy of the post-mortem report.

As there was delay on their part to accept the body even after police made them available a copy of the post-mortem report on Saturday evening, Thiruvadanai DSP had served the notice on Sunday morning that the body would be disposed of if they failed to receive it.

C. Arul Sabastian, son of the deceased, received the body on Monday and conducted the funeral in the afternoon. After keeping the body at his house in Pullur for a few hours, they buried it at a private place of the deceased at Kalavasal, east of Pullur cemetery.

The funeral mass was conducted by one of the priests who had conducted mass for Dalit Christians at RS Mangalam in November last year for “All Souls Day”, sources said.
