Killed in encounter

A special police team hunted down history-sheeter M. Kittappa (39) of Kaansaapuram near here on Saturday evening when he allegedly tried to murder a SI and two policemen when they tried to arrest him .

Police formed a special team to nab Kittappa, who was facing more than 25 criminal cases, including two murder cases, three attempt-to-murder cases, and was allegedly orchestrating attacks on members of other communities and conducting ‘kangaroo courts.’

Following a tip-off, the team raided a house in Suththamalli. Kittappa attacked SI Sivaramakrishnan, head-constable Krishnasamy and vehicle driver Saravana Sundar. Sivaramakrishnan opened fire, injuring Kittappa. He died on the way to the hospital.
