Kerala Chief Minister Oomen Chandy has assured a delegation of Livestock and Agri Farmers Trade Association (LIFT) that his government would shortly lift ban on eggs, chicken and other poultry by-products from Tamil Nadu, according to P.V. Senthil, LIFT general secretary
Ban on poultry products
The Kerala government imposed the ban on poultry products from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu following reports of bird flu in a turkey farm in Bangalore.
After meeting the Chief Minister in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday, Dr. Senthil told The Hindu that “we have pointed out to him that Tamil Nadu continued to export eggs to Oman, Bahrain, Afghanistan and countries in West Africa even after the bird flu outbreak was confirmed in India. This shows that eggs here are safe for consumption and that the Government of Kerala can be confident that it will not affect consumers of that State,” Dr. Senthil said, adding that as per the guidelines of the World Organisation for Animal Health, only products from farms located within three-km radius of the bird flu-affected area should not be sold. The delegation was led by honorary president of LIFT Mohan Kumaramangalam.
