Kerala should join hands with Tamil Nadu and fight against establishing India-based Neutrino Observatory (INO) in Theni district as it would cause more problems to Kerala than Tamil Nadu, Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko said and added that he would meet Kerala Chief Minister in this connection shortly.

Leading a demonstration against the INO project here on Monday, he said, “Mullaperiyar dam did not pose a threat to Kerala but the INO does.

It is a real threat to Idukki district. It is time Kerala stood united with Tamil Nadu in the fight for a common cause.”

Tamil Nadu government should not extend its support to the project. The Narendra Modi-led Central government had been “conspiring” to destroy natural resources of the State through a series of projects such as methane and INO.

The State government was duty-bound to protect the interests of the people, he said.

Unusually, Mr. Vaiko did not come down hard against INO project as he did in the Mullaperiyar issue.

On dangers posed by the INO, he said 1,000 tonnes of gelatine would be used to blast rocks and 8 lakh tonnes of granite stones would be removed.

Tonnes of dust would pollute the environment.

Other speakers lambasted the authorities for not sanctioning adequate funds to complete long-pending projects such as Madurai-Bodi gauge conversion and Sakkaluthu Mettu road and Dindigul-Sabarimalai new railway line.
