Welcoming the State government’s announcement of a new district with Tenkasi as its headquarters, MDMK leader Vaiko on Wednesday said Sankarankovil should be part of Tirunelveli district.

In a statement, Mr. Vaiko pointed out that there were no direct roads from Sankarankovil and Tiruvengadam to Tenkasi, and that these towns were located far away from Tenkasi.

“Tirunelveli is closer to these towns. For educational and medical requirements, the people from these two towns visit Tirunelveli,” Mr. Vaiko said.

As most people in Sankarankovil and Tiruvengadam wanted to be part of Tirunelveli district, Mr. Vaiko argued that the State government should take steps to retain these places in the existing Tirunelveli district.

The MDMK leader condemned the murder of the former DMK Mayor of Tirunelveli, Uma Maheshwari, and urged the police to bring the culprits to book. Paying tribute to the deceased,

Mr. Vaiko said she had earned a good reputation for her down-to-earth approach. He noted that there had been a rise in the number of murders across the State in recent times.
