Karunanidhi opposes privatisation of Railways

June 16, 2015 12:00 am | Updated June 17, 2015 04:28 pm IST - CHENNAI:

DMK leader M. Karunanidhi on Monday urged the BJP government to reject Bibek Debroy report on restructuring the Indian Railways, arguing that the recommendations of the report would pave way for privatisation and render the Indian Railways a profit-driven sector without any social commitment.

In a statement here, he said the BJP government that had been showing enormous interest in divesting the shares of the profit-making public sector units, known as Navaratanas, and now it moved further to privatise the Railways based on the recommendations of the Bibek Debroy report. “If implemented the recommendations will severely affect not only the poor and middle class passengers, but also railway employees,” he said.

Yoga Day

Mr. Karunanidhi also expressed his reservations on the International Yoga Day to be observed on June 21. “I learnt and practised yoga. It is my wish that everyone should learn and practise yoga that would strengthen the mind and body. But we should also keep in mind the remarks of CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury that it was part of the BJP’s Hindutva agenda,” he said.

When over 1.95 crore children were suffering from malnutrition and 24 per cent of the population were deprived of nutritious meal, how could one can expect them to practise yoga, he quoted Mr. Yechury as saying.
