Kanchi seer’s father passes away

Mukkamalla Krishnamurthy Sastry, 96, father of Vijayendra Saraswati, pontiff of the Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetham, passed away on Saturday morning.

Sastry, who had been ill for sometime, passed away on the auspicious Mahalaya Amavasya after a life dedicated to knowledge and teaching.

The last rites would be held in his native village, Thandalam near Periyapalayam on Sunday.

An exponent in Rig Veda, he imparted Vedic education to more than hundred students at the math’s patashala in Polur and Kancheepuram.

He has taught the Rig Veda to his sons M. K. Sankaranarayana and M. K. Raghu. M.K. Sankaranarayana went on to become the 70th Acharya of Kanchi Math.
