Amid widespread protests by students and activists against the ban on jallikattu, Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Thursday said the State and the Central governments would soon take steps to ensure that it is conducted.

Talking to reporters after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, Mr. Panneerselvam said Mr. Modi patiently listened to the demands raised by him. “He [Prime Minister] said the Supreme Court’s judgment on Centre’s notification was being awaited and the Centre would be supportive of the action that would be taken by the State government on the issue,” Mr. Panneerselvam said.

“I would like to say that along with the Centre, we [Tamil Nadu government] would immediately take steps to ensure jallikattu is conducted. You will soon see the action of the State government,” he added.

Drought relief

Besides jallikattu, the Chief Minister also reiterated the State government’s request for sanctioning funds to the tune of Rs. 39,565 crore towards drought relief for all 32 districts of the State.

Replying to a query on reports of police action on activists and students, Mr. Panneerselvam said there were no such incidents.
