Islam, which calls for the need for best conduct among people, dwells on the need for unity in humanity and the centrality of moral conduct, said Governor K. Rosaiah on Sunday.
Participating in the Eid Milan party organised here, he said “the essence of Islam lies in the moral character it tries to infuse in the individuals' daily life. The great prophets of all religions and great people have laid emphasis on the ideals of unity, compassion and love.”
Mr. Rosaiah released a publication on Ramadan and gave cheques to representatives of Hindu, Christian and Muslim charitable organisations.
Mentioning that Sunday (9/11) marked the 10th anniversary of twin towers attack in the United States, the US Consul General in Chennai Jennifer McIntyre said that over the years, Americans had learnt to confront intolerance and violent action and to nurture communal harmony, diversity and rule of law.
Referring to the statement of the U.S President Barack Obama, she said “we reaffirm the spirit of partnership and mutual respect and will continue to work together to realise a world where all people live in dignity, freedom and peace.”
Presiding over the function, Mayilvahanan Natarajan, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University, said that the fight against violence, corruption and extremism had to be carried on. S. K. Khadri, convenor, committee of hosts, said “the purpose of the event is to promote inter-communal harmony and commemorate the festival of Ramadan. Religions do not teach us to practise violence or acts of terror.”
