Construction of an interpretation centre at the birds sanctuary in Karaivetti near here has been in progress to cater to the needs of bird watchers, environmentalists and tourists.

The sanctuary in Suthamalli village panchayat has 454.37 hectares on the banks of which the interpretation centre has been constructed. It would provide sound and light effect of the chirpings of the birds which flock towards the sanctuary.

Art works on the birds prominently and regularly visiting the sanctuary would be displayed, according to official sources.

The major birds which arrive at the sanctuary are Grey Heron, Open Bill Stork, Grey Pelican, Red walted capwing, Little Grebe so on and so forth.

To attract the visitors, particularly children, an artificial falls with a height of 10 feet, a children’s park, walker’s path and toilet blocks for men and women have been constructed. The work is expected to be completed before March this year, sources told The Hindu here on Monday.

As part of beautification of the area, the Forest Department has sent a proposal to the Panchayat Development Department for setting up street lights on the road branching off towards the sanctuary to a length of 440 metres. “Once street lights are provided, electrification of the Interpretation Centre will be taken up,” the source said.
