The Santhanam Commission of Inquiry has concluded its probe into the Aruppukottai audiotape scandal. Retired IAS Officer R. Santhanam, who was appointed by Governor Banwarilal Purohit to carry out the probe, said the final report could be expected by May 15.
There were transcripts which needed to be translated from Tamil to English, Mr. Santhanam said during a press briefing at the Circuit House on Friday.
When asked whether the report would remain confidential, he said he would submit it to the Governor, who may forward it to the government. “It will be their decision to make the report public or otherwise,” he said.
Mr. Santhanam said the recommendations of the commission and the parallel CB-CID inquiry would not have any effect on each other. Around 60 people were inquired in connection with the case, he said.
The one-man commission was constituted to probe an audiotape involving an assistant professor, P. Nirmala Devi, of the Devanga Arts College in Aruppukottai, Virudhunagar — a college affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University. Devi is accused of attempting to lure college girls into fulfilling sexual favours of top university officials.
