No country like ours: Chidambaram

No political party or individual can destroy India’s diversity and plurality. There is no country in the world which is as diverse as ours. It is a country where at least seven major religions are practised, 15-16 major languages and over 100 dialects are spoken, said P. Chidambaram, former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament here on Friday.

The Congress leader was speaking at the inauguration of Youth Parliament 2017 conducted by Madras Christian College Higher Secondary School.

“Other countries such as the U.S., Canada and Australia are only now finding ways to deal with diversity,” he said.

Reflecting on the goods and services tax implemented by the Centre from July 1, Mr. Chidambaram said: “Parliament makes a number of laws, some of them are bad laws. I have said more than once that the GST law made in Parliament is defective. I have said in Parliament that if we make this law and don’t remove the defects, it will cause huge misery among the people. My voice was a minority voice and majority prevailed. But the majority is not always right.”
