India and Japan have traditionally shared strong ties, and in recent years, the relationship has been expanding politically, economically and culturally, Kojiro Uchiyama, Consul-General of Japan, said on Wednesday.

Mr. Uchiyama said the people-to-people exchange between the two nations was growing and continued to be the driving force behind the relationship.

He was speaking at a welcome reception organised in his honour by the Indo-Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry to mark his taking charge as the Consul General of Japan following the retirement of Seiji Baba, the previous Consul General.

Mr. Uchiyama took over as Consul in the second week of April.

N. Murali, chairman, Kasturi and Sons Ltd, said the huge potential for trade between the two countries was yet to be fully tapped.

“The FDI is only around $2 billion and trade is stagnant at under $15 billion,” he said.
