OCPM girls’ feat

Five girls (three from super senior and two from senior categories) from OCPM Girls Higher Secondary School, Madurai, represented Tamil Nadu in the 60th national-level ball badminton tournament conducted by the School Games Federation of India (SGFI) in Salem recently. A total of 22 States participated in the event. The Tamil Nadu girls won the gold defeating Karnataka in the senior and super senior category. While in the super senior category, Captain R. Hema Honeyma, S. Muthuselvi and R. Vanmathy emerged medal winners, R. Sushmitha and A. Kaveri won gold medals in the senior category. Rt. Rev.M. Joseph, Bishop of Madurai-Ramnad Diocese, Leela Manohari, Bishop Amma and Headmistress, Nirmala, Correspondent, along with T. Ruby Chellathai, Physical Director and Physical Education teachers Rajesh Kannan, B. Sharmila and B. Mary Magdalane congratulated the winners.

Interaction meet

The Madurai Chapter of Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) organised an interaction meet with the Commerce students of Lady Doak College on January 7. Sutanu Sinha, CEO, ICSI, gave an insight into the course of Company Secretaryship to the students and briefed them on the various e-learning facilities available to pursue the course online. R. Sridharan, president of ICSI, motivated the students to take up the course by elaborating the various opportunities available and said that the Companies Act, 2013, had further enlarged the scope of the profession.

‘Transmission and Distribution’

The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of K.L.N. College of Information Technology conducted an Anna University-approved seven-day faulty development training programme on ‘Transmission and Distribution’ from December 29 to January 4. K. Sivakumar, Dean, Regional Office, Madurai, Anna University, Chennai, motivated the faculty members, especially the youngsters, to utilise such programmes for their personality and career development. Technical session were conducted on general research techniques as well. A one-day industrial visit to the Madurai Power Corporation at Paravai was also organised.

Football match

A district-Level inter-polytechnic football match was held at Vickram Polytechnic College on January 2 and 3. Students from various polytechnic colleges across Madurai, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, Theni and Dindigul districts participated in the match. In the final match between Chettinad Annamalai Polytechnic College and Sri Krishna Polytechnic College, Batlagundu, the former emerged winners. M.K.S. Sreenivasan, chairman, Vickram Educational Institutions, gave away prizes to the winners.

‘Research Article Writing’

The Departments of Commerce and Business Administration of E.M.G. Yadava Women’s College organised a guest lecture programme on ‘Research Article Writing’ on December 19. P. Vanniyarajan, Head and Associate Professor of Business Administration, N.M.S.S. Vellaichamy Nadar College, motivated the beginners for pursuing empirical research and outlined the list of reputed commerce journals for article writing. He spoke about methodology, data collection, results and discussion, summary and references.

More than 65 postgraduate commerce students and 25 faculty members participated in the programme.

Biotechnology techniques

The Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of Sourashtra College (Autonomous) conducted a State-level workshop on ‘Advanced Techniques in Biotechnology’ from December 24 to 26. B. Anand Kumar, Scientific Officer, CSTG-MMG, Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research, Kalpakkam, delivered the keynote address. The theme of the workshop was to disseminate practical knowledge and expertise to undergraduate students of life science disciplines.

On Supremacy of Women

The Women Empowerment Cell of Madurai Sivakasi Nadars Pioneer Meenakshi Women’s College organised a special lecture on December 23 on the college premises in the presence of Principal C. Ramalakshmi. R. Poongkuzhali, Head, Tamil Department, gave a special lecture on ‘The Supremacy of Women – The Past and at Present’ to the members of women empowerment cell.

Energy and Environment

The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of the Saraswathi Narayanan College conducted a seminar on ‘Energy and Environment.’ N. Vasudevan, Associate Professor of Botany, spoke on the various types of energy resources and how to conserve energy for environmental development. He also emphasised that by 2040, there would be a grave depletion of non-renewable of energy and so there would be a great need for alternative energy.
