Hundreds of people from several districts thronged the memorial of Dalit leader Immanuel Sekaran in Paramakudi on Tuesday to on the occasion of his 61st death anniversary.
The Dalit leader’s family and people of Sellur, the native village of Sekaran, were the first to pay their respects. Hundreds of people lined up to pay their homage.
The district police have thrown a massive security cordon, deploying about 5,000 police personnel.
Additional Director General of Police (Law and Order) Vijay Kumar and Inspector General of Police (South Zone) K.P. Shanmuga Rajeswaran monitored the security arrangements.
Leaders of various political parties are slated to visit the memorial later in the day.
The district administration has promulgated prohibitory order and banned all types of hired vehicles from transporting volunteers to the memorial. Mulaipari and milk pot processions, carrying of ‘jothis’ and erection of banners were allowed only in the town that too after obtaining prior permission.
