Hold special session for farmers: Sainath

‘It will show that you care for them’

Journalist and writer P. Sainath on Thursday called for holding a special session of Parliament to discuss farmers and the farm sector.

Addressing a meeting organised by the Tamil Nadu chapter of the Nation For Farmers here, he said that at least three days were needed to discuss the water crisis. “When you hold a special session, you are telling your farmers that you care. Farm labourers and farmers are leaving their villages to work in the city as there is no water left for agriculture. Disputes among the States are usually about sharing the waters of rivers,” he said.

Mr. Sainath said that it had been 14 years since the M.S. Swaminathan Commission report was submitted but Parliament did not have time to discuss it. “But when it came to the GST, they sat till late and debated it,” he pointed out. The farmers march in Delhi in November saw ryots demanding a special session of Parliament to discuss two private member bills focussing on loan waivers and minimum support price for crops.

He said that the march to Mumbai was an eyeopener for many. It saw doctors, lawyers, teachers, college students and businessmen come out in large numbers and do whatever they could for them, he said.

Former IAS officer M.G. Devasahayam and D. Thomas Franco, general secretary, SBIPA spoke.
