The steep hike in the prices of fruits and other puja articles has not deterred the people, as they flock the markets across the district on the eve of Ayudha Puja on Tuesday.
Fruits such as apple, sweet orange (sattukudi), and pomegranate have arrived in good number from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and other north Indian states. These fruits have registered a price hike ranging between Rs. 10 and Rs. 40 per kg.
While apple is priced between Rs. 100 and Rs. 120, pomegranate is priced between Rs. 100 and 140 and sattukudi - Rs. 50.
All the markets are flooded with plantain trees, which are integral part of Ayudha Puja. The trees that arrived from Tiruchi, Namakkal and Karur districts were unloaded in front of the temporary shops that have sprang up on the roadsides in Meyyanur road, Suramangalam, Koranguchavadi, Ammapet, Thadagapatti, Shevvapet, Hasthampatti, Five roads junction, Four roads junction etc on Tuesday evening.
The ash gourd stock has arrived from Dharmapuri, Harur, Uthangarai, and Perambalur towns.
People were also seen in grocery shops purchasing agarbathis, sandal paste and powder, kumkum, viboothi, Tirumanjanam, oil, camphor etc.
