Heavy rain batters roads

June 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:35 am IST - SALEM:

Heavy rain that has been lashing the city for the last few weeks has battered many of the roads in the city, making travelling difficult for citizens.

The city received 70.9mm rainfall on Thursday. Water was stagnating on most of the roads resulting in traffic congestion. Laying of underground cables by the Tangedco, underground drainage work and laying of pipelines for the water scheme are in progress.

Hence, most of the city roads are dug up.

Many roads are filled with slush. Either the drains are clogged, or they don’t exist forcing storm water to stagnate on roads.

The corporation’s failure to take precautionary measures has irked residents. Roads are not repaired, drains are not cleaned, and roads dug up for various works are not re-laid properly. Though the corporation says it lacks funds, people want minimum works to be carried out on battered roads. At least, big pits should be filled, and encroachments removed, they say.

The catchment areas of Stanley Reservoir at Mettur, however, showed a decline in rain.

The inflow of water continued to drop here on Friday. PWD officials said that the flow of water dropped from 7,058 cusecs on Thursday morning to 5,508 cusecs on Friday.

The water level stood at 72.99ft against its full reservoir level of 120ft. About 2,000 cusecs of water was released for drinking.
