The heart and lungs of a 38-year-old man, who was declared brain dead at the Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore, was flown to Chennai on Saturday.
Settu, a resident of Kollaimedu, Devarishikuppam, sustained injuries after his two-wheeler was hit by another two-wheeler rider, who was coming in the opposite direction, near Kalinjur on October 19.
Settu, who was a milk supplier, fell off his vehicle in the accident. He was admitted to CMC on October 20.
Settu did not respond to treatment. Following this, doctors declared him brain dead at 8.06 a.m. on Saturday. His family was informed about his condition, and it gave consent to donate his organs.
Doctors retrieved his heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, pancreas and eyes. Sangeeth Devanand, transplant coordinator of CMC, said this was the first time that pancreas was retrieved from a brain-dead person at CMC.
As per the organ allocation by the Cadaver Transplant Programme, Chennai, the heart, lungs, a kidney and pancreas were allotted to Apollo Hospitals, Chennai, while the liver, another kidney and cornea went to CMC. Mr. Devanand said a team of doctors from Apollo Hospitals left CMC with the heart and lungs in an ambulance at 4.25 p.m.
They reached the helipad at VIT University and left for Chennai in an air ambulance.
“The organs reached Chennai in one hour and three minutes,” he said. Police ensured that traffic was clear.
