The special ‘adolescent girls self-rights development scheme’ to ensure proper growth of girls during their adolescent stage in Alathur block was inaugurated at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Karai and Kolakkanatham villages on Thursday.

Preliminary medical tests marked the inaugural of the scheme being implemented under the State Balanced Growth Funds through the Integrated Child Development Scheme (ICDS).

The objective of the scheme, among other things, is to empower women with life and basic skills through sensitisation on diet, body mass index, and cultural programmes.

It would also help reduce maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate through proper intake of healthy and nutritious diet during adolescent stage, according to Bhuvaneswari, Programme Officer, ICDS.

Seven medical teams have been constituted for conducting the health camps for adolescent girls in the age-group of 13-18 years at all aided and government high schools, higher secondary and middle schools in the block, she said.

Life skill development was another objective of the programme for which cultural programmes would be organised during the course of the programme, she added.
