The Madras High Court has asked officials of the Thiruverkadu Municipality and Tangedco to appear before it in a petition alleging they encroached upon land owned by a temple.
The Block Development Officer of Poonamallee, the Commissioner of Thiruverkadu Municipality and Executive Officer of Thiruverkadu Devi Karumariamman Temple have been asked to appear before the Division Bench comprising Justices N. Kirubakaran and S. Bhasakaran at 2.15 p.m. on Monday.
The petition by A. Radhakrishnan seeks to remove alleged encroachments and waste dumped by Thiruverkadu Municipality on property owned by the Karumariamman Devi temple. The petitioner alleged that the Tangedco had built a substation on the temple land without following procedure.
Spot inspection
According to petitioner, when the tahsildar of Poonamallee visited the properties in question along with the tahsildar of Maduravoyal, it was noticed by the officials that municipal waste was dumped in 2,000 sq. ft. The petition says the waste is causing a foul smell that affects the devotees. The two tahsildars wrote to the District Collector of Tiruvallur on July 27 about the menace.
