The Madras High Court has directed the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC), the Teachers Recruitment Board (TRB), the Medical Services Recruitment Board (MRB) and the Directorate of Employment and Training to conduct a special recruitment drive to fill 2,670 vacancies meant for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in various government departments.
A Division Bench of Justices S. Manikumar and Subramonium Prasad ordered that notifications calling for applications for the vacancies should be issued within a month, and the entire recruitment process should be completed in six months.
The judges also sought to know the progress made on the issue by November 16.The orders were passed on a fresh writ petition as well as a contempt of court petition filed by S. Karuppiah, founder of the Central and State Government Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Employees Federation.
Non-compliance claim
The contempt petition had been filed for alleged non-compliance with a similar order passed by the Madras High Court on July 18, 2014.
The petitioner’s counsel P. Vijendran brought to the notice of the court that the government had been dragging its feet on the issue of filling backlog vacancies for years together, without any end in sight.
Mr. Vijendran claimed that as on date, 1,936 vacancies had to be notified through the TNPSC, the TRB and the MRB, apart from 734 vacancies through the employment exchanges.
