HC serves ultimatum in idol theft case

The Madras High Court on Friday fixed an ultimatum for the Hindu Religious and Endowments (HR&CE) Department to render all assistance, in compliance of a set of 21 directions issued by the court last year, for a special police team constituted on the basis of court orders last year for probing idol theft cases in the State and prosecuting the offenders.

Justice R. Mahadevan made it clear that all his directions should be complied with before March 23, failing which he would take action against the officials concerned.

During the course of arguments, the judge came down heavily on the government for citing finances as the reason for not implementing the orders.
