The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on Tuesday appreciated the conduct of jallikattu at Avaniapuram, where the event was largely incident-free.

The event was organised under the chairmanship of retired District and Sessions Judge C. Raghavan, who will receive from District Collector of Madurai ₹1.75 lakh as remuneration for organising it. Other members of the organising committee included advocates B. Saravanan, N. Dilip Kumar and Anand Chandrasekar, who will receive ₹1.25 lakh each. A Division Bench of Justices K.K.Sasidharan and P.D.Audikesavalu had formed the organising committee after petitions were filed seeking equal representation for all communities. After peace committee meetings organised by the district administration failed, the court formed an organising committee to ensure smooth conduct of the event.

The court, apart from setting up the new panel, reduced the original organising committee’s role to that of an advisory committee.

When the petitions came before the court for hearing, the court was informed of the smooth conduct of the event. The court appreciated the Revenue, Animal Husbandry, Police and Health departments for ensuring the peaceful conduct of the event.
